Installing the Windows NT driver

This section is divided into the following:

Windows NT v3.5

Step 1.
Display the Network dialog Main > Control Panel > Network

Step 2.
Select the Add Adapter button.

Step 3.
The system will display a list of network adapter cards. Select the last entry: <Other> Requires disk from manufacturer, and press the Continue button.

Step 4.
Specify the path to the driver directory on the CD (ie, D:\winnt\i386 where D: is your CD drive) and click 'OK'

Step 5.
The system will then display a list of Stallion adapter cards. Select the correct adapter type and click 'OK'.

Step 6.
If your system has multiple buses and the card you have selected is compatible with more than one bus, you will be asked to select the bus type (eg. ISA, MCA, EISA, PCI) and bus number.

Step 7.
If the board you are installing is in an EISA bus, you are asked to select the number of the bus slot in which the board is installed. If you are installing an ISA or MCA bus, you are asked to select the I/O address and memory address.

For PCI, the installation dialog will automatically detect installed boards and display a list of those which have not been previously configured. Select one of these boards. Click `OK' when ready.

Step 8.
You are now asked to specify the panel configuration and determine the COM port names (default names are allocated, but these may be altered). Select the 'Panel1', 'Panel2'... radio buttons in turn to configure each module. Select the number of ports (8 or 16) for each module and press 'OK'.

Step 9.
Installation will now complete without further user input. The driver will be started automatically when the system is rebooted.

Boot Error
If an error occurs during the boot process, an error message is displayed. Errors can be caused by incorrect DIP switch settings, address clash or a faulty board. Use the Event Viewer in Administrative Tools to check for driver errors. Stallion driver errors are indicated by "StlnATA" in the Source field. Board diagnostics, described in this manual, may be used to check for faulty boards.

Windows NT v4.0

Step 1.
Display the Network dialog Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network > Adapters

Step 2.
The system displays a list of installed network adapter cards. Select the Add button.

Step 3.
Select the Have Disk button.

If you are installing an ISA or MCA bus, you are asked to select the I/O address(es) and memory address.

For PCI, the installation dialog will automatically detect installed boards and display a list of those which have not been previously configured. Select one of these boards. Click `OK' when ready.

Step 8.
You are now asked to specify the panel configuration and determine the COM port names (default names are allocated, but you may change these if you wish). For each panel select `Panel Type' and if necessary modify the Port Map by specifying alternate starting point for COM numbering on that panel. When finished configuring all panels, click `OK'.

Step 9.
Installation will now complete without further user input. The driver will be started automatically when the system is rebooted. Close the Network dialogue. This will update the system configuration.

Boot errors.
If an error occurs during the boot process, an error message is displayed. Errors can be caused by incorrect DIP switch settings, address clash, IRQ clash or a faulty board. Use the Event Viewer in Administrative Tools to check for driver errors. Stallion driver errors are indicated by "StlnATA" in the Source field. Board diagnostics, described in this manual, may be used if necessary.
Windows NT Diagnostics (Programs > Administrative Tools > Windows NT Diagnostics) may be used to check which resources are available.

Driver Administration

This section outlines various driver administrative functions.

Port Configuration

Ports are configured directly by Win32 applications. For DOS applications, you must configure port settings such as baud rate and handshaking through the standard Ports dialog in Control Panel.

Configuring Printer Ports

To configure a new serial printer port, first configure the port using the Ports dialog. Then reboot or stop and restart the Spooler service. This makes the port visible to Print Manager so that you can configure a printer on this port.

Installing Additional Stallion Adapters

The process is as described in the previous sections, but in step 3 select the appropriate adapter type from the list of known network adapters. Steps 4 and 5 are omitted.

Reconfiguration and Removal of Adapters

From the Network dialog, select `Adapters' then the appropriate installed Stallion board from the displayed list and then press the Configure or Remove button. After reconfiguring or removing adapters, the system should be rebooted.

Updating the Driver

From the Network dialog select one of the installed Stallion adapters and press the Update button. Insert the CD ROM when requested, specify the path, eg D:\winnt\i386, and press 'OK'. When the update is complete, remove the CD ROM and restart the system.

Port Monitoring and Driver Statistics

A Stallion diagnostics tool, Easyadmw, has been included to allow monitoring of various port statistics and to assist in troubleshooting serial problems.
Click Here to go to the Easyadmw Reference section.

The STALPORT Utility

As part of the driver installation, a utility called STALPORT.EXE is installed on the system.
Click here for more information on the STALPORT Utility.
